Glen Hansard live sxsw short clip
What is the purpose of your podcast? It’s partially intended to be a showcase for independent artists both local and global with favoritism to Youngstown Warren NE Ohio artists. I hope that it will also be a network pool and tool for artists that are trying to make a mark in the local music scene if not the secular music industry. The show can also serve as a Consumer Reports reference for artists to know which Venue’s take care of musicians and which ones may rip you off.
What is a Podcast? See previous post “What is it ..a pod what?”
Why am I listening to your podcast and why would an artist want to be interviewed by you when there are other podcasts and radio shows featuring local music? Well, I was born and raised in Warren Ohio and I’ve made alot of musician friends in garages & bars over the years. You’ll be surprised by many of the well known artists that I have sheduled to be interviewed. My show is non-profit, I’m an artist myself who has tried to make a name for myself, I have been apart of several bands going back to elementary school concert band, marching band, jazz band, YSU Dana Choir, to black sabbath tribute band Rat Salad. I lived in NY for three years returning to Ohio to form the band MALISON FROWN. We played with acts such as The Infidels,Bunji Jambo, Liquid Brick, Coinmonster while also more recently writing 4 original songs with the band DOWNLOAD and releasing my original music EP CD “Summer Days”, Most recently I performed and recorded with 7 Saturdays (French Blue +3) I also was the guy who put together LOCALPALOOZA, a RuKusRadio DJ, and I think I have a large bank of experience and knowledge that can help younger aspiring artists. If not by sharing the knowledge of what to to.. maybe what NOT to do. I have many mistakes that one can learn from.
Sweetening the deal, if you come to my house for an interview, I will buy your CD and maybe even a Tshirt. You are also welcome to have a CD copy of the interview and I will master any live songs performed on the show if you’d like. It’s my intention to use this show to help with kickstarter campaigns and sponsor an artist once a year to take them to the SXSW Music Converence in Austin TX.
Do I have to play a song for the recorded interview? No, but you are welcome to.
How long does an interview take? I will wrap it up at the 50minute mark not allowing actually recording to go over 1 Hr. Just be here a 15 minutes before scheduled slot. It’s a relentless non-stop production, so although you’ll have the chance to request edits of flubs, you don’t have to sit through post production or technical pauses.
Where will this podcast recording be available? I will promote via facebook, twitter, and I do a live show at The Lemon Grove. It will eventually be available for FREE downloading and Ipod syncing @Itunes and obviously @ www.jimmyfro.com.
I hate Itunes and would like Apple to die in a pool of hot lava and razors. Well.. that’s a bit graphic, but to answer your concern.. there will be a MP3 podcast player and maybe even an Ap.available at Jimmyfro.com Wordpress tells me that they can swing that. SpinXpress will also host the audio file.
What do I bring to your house and can you come to me? Just bring a CD of your material or any indie artist you want to showcase/share. Bring an XL Tshirt too. This is so low stress. I want it to be like friends chilling ..listening to albums..Cd’s, talking music in a comfortable living room. Yes, I can.. come to you.. however, you will sound better and have more editing options if u come to me, and I will buy some merch off ya.
How do I contact you to schedule an interview? email me at Jimmyfro5@aol.com or Jimmy@Jimmyfro.com
How do I prepare for the interview? Just put on pants and shoes, then show up at our mutually agreed upon scheduled time. As this endeavor is partly intended to be beneficial to me as well, I encourage guests to ask me questions about my music and my history if you’d like. You can bring specific dates, web addresses, that will help promote an upcoming show. Choose a show, party, etc, that is at least 3 weeks ahead of interview date. This allows me time to edit, tweek, and drop podcast in a time appropriate manner. Have a band or artist, movie, song, you’d like to plug for the end of the show.
Do I have to be an artist who writes original music? No, a musician is a musician. As a matter of fact, this subject will reoccur on the show.
My whole band wants to come for the interview, is that cool? It’s cool.. however, I only have 3 lapel microphones, so to minimize my post production, I can only mic up 2 members.
What kind of independent music do you listen to? spotified playlist.
I often get asked “what’s up with the name Jimmy..Fro?” This should be a real short blog post. The name Jimmyfro came from a friend Mike Razzano. He jokingly suggested that I should soup up my name..image, and go by the name DJ JimmyFro! I found the name funny but catchy and used it for my first AOL email address in 1995. Although I obviously never used the name as my DJ name, I still use jimmyfro5 today.
For many people born in the 70’s or prior to,Jimmy Fro cojures up images of a white guy with an Afro, the name jimmyfro has a rhyming ring to it and it’s sort of gimmicky but also memorable. How boring would Chucky Cheese be if it was called The Pizza Arcade, or Yahoo just calling itself The Cool Web Service. That’s all. The secret has been revealed. If you’re interested in listening to audio mp3 interviews of local artists while you check your facebook, email, etc, check out my podcast project below. Coming soon. 1 on 1 interviews with Gary Pirrung, Steve Vuich, Dave Hammers Power Supply, Pete Drivere, Nate Mackey, third class, and Space Eskimo. Also in talks, is a sit down with Left End frontman Dennis T Menass (Dennis Sesonsky).

The Korg. A very capable and portable podcast rig. Together with Lapel Microphones and some great post-production mastering, the podcasts are sounding great!
No, a podcast is not an Alien Fishing Rod. Very simply put, it is sort of a DVR’d Talk Radio Show. Podcasts are readily available at Itunes, most of which are FREE. They run like TV sitcoms some more or less frequent than others. If you like talk radio but only really listen to it on the way to or home from work, you will probably like listening to commercial free podcast programs. The best thing is, besides being FREE, is that YOU choose the topic, program, or host of your choice. Podcasts are great for working out or long road trips. I listen to them to pass time and fight monotony at work. By subscribing to a podcast, your pc will download the newest episode when available and wait for your smart phone/Ipod sync session. Download your podcast MP3 directly and listen to it while you blog, check your email, or facebook. There are also smart phone apps such as Stitcher that collect and download all your favorite podcasts for you, and without connecting to your pc. (My 2nd favorite podcast is Nerdist, and they have opted out of Stitcher.. unfortunately)
WTF Podcast with Marc Maron: This is the podcast by comedian Marc Maron that inspired me to launch my own small scale local celebrity podcast. Marc, like myself, has worked hard to break through and make a name for himself in his respective field of stand up comedy, but has been passed over while his peers like Jon Stewart and Bill Mahr have enjoyed successful celebrity careers. He has been host of The Marc Maron Show, and co-host of both Morning Sedition, and Breakroom Live, all politically-oriented shows, produced under the auspices of Air America Media. He was also the host of Comedy Central’s Short Attention Span Theater for a year, replacing Jon Stewart. Maron has been a frequent guest on the Late Show with David Letterman and made 44 appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, more than any other stand-up performer. However, he is not a household name and most importantly.. he openly admits to “not making it.” Anyone who is popular in the entertainment business, most specifically in comedy, has been interviewed by Marc and with every interview..or conversation, he works through his disappointment and bitterness while getting closer and closer to finding a place for his identity to live comfortably. Since 2009, WTF podcast has been downloaded 20 million times.
The Nerdist: Another podcast created by stand-up comedian Chris Hardwick, host of the 90’s Mtv dating show Singled Out. The nerdist podcast also interviews celebrities but more tech industry celebs mixed in with tv personalities and movie stars. If you like computers, the internet, comics, sci-fi, and technology, you will love the dropped knowledge shared on this podcast. Like Maron, Hardwick also eludes to his obscurity and struggle for recognition.
There are shorter podcasts also, like NPR newsbreaks, and indie music 1 song spotlights. IndieFeed, kill rock stars and many more. Sports fans can check out ESPN Fantasy Focus for the latest on NFL Players and fantasy strategy.
I hope that my JimmyfroShow podcast in addition to showcasing indie music, will help other local artists trying to make a name for themselves or at least achieve personal fulfillment, while also shining some light on my own personal pursuit of purpose and identity acceptance.
